What is the purpose of the Learning Exchange?

The trip is designed to inspire and inform Marin County leaders by exploring San Luis Obispo’s innovative strategies for placemaking, community and economic vitality, and public-private collaboration.

What is 'placemaking'?
​
Placemaking is the process of transforming public spaces into vibrant places that promote community well-being, connection, and economic vitality. It’s about creating spaces people love—whether through design, programming, partnerships, or policies that bring life and meaning to streets, parks, plazas, and neighborhoods.

Who is attending this trip?
​
A cross-sector mix of public and private sector leaders from Marin County. A full list of confirmed participants is available on the trip website under Participants.

What kinds of places will we be visiting?
We’ll tour a variety of sites that showcase San Luis Obispo’s success in building community vitality, including: The Cal Poly HotHouse Incubator, Downtown placemaking projects, Public plazas and pedestrian-friendly corridors. Locations demonstrating strong public-private partnerships and community-centered design

Can I make suggestions if I think of places to see or people to meet?
Absolutely. This is a collaborative effort, and your ideas are welcome. If you know of someone or somewhere in SLO that could add value to the experience, please reach out to our trip coordinator, Kendall Roark

Do I have to stay for the entire trip?
While we understand that schedules can be tricky, we strongly encourage participants to attend the full three days. The itinerary is designed to build momentum and connection throughout the experience. If you anticipate needing to arrive late or leave early, please let us know as soon as possible.

What’s included in the itinerary?
The trip includes sessions with SLO civic and business leaders, site visits, walking tours, and dedicated time for peer reflection and group dialogue.

Do I need to RSVP even if I already confirmed by email?
Yes. Please complete the RSVP form on the website by August 4th. This helps us plan for logistics like lodging, transportation coordination, and dietary needs.

Who is paying for the trip?
Participants are responsible for their own travel and hotel costs, plus a modest contribution toward shared trip expenses. The County is coordinating the itinerary and group programming.
​
Will help be available for booking hotels or transportation?
Yes. Kendall Roark, our trip coordinator, will be reaching out to support participants with lodging options and planning assistance.

What should I bring?
Plan for business casual attire, comfortable shoes for walking tours, and any personal items you’d normally bring for a short professional trip. And bring your curiosity—this is meant to be an inspiring and energizing experience.

What are the goals of the exchange?

To return to Marin with fresh ideas, stronger relationships, and actionable strategies that support economic vitality, community connection, and a forward-thinking approach to local leadership.
